Special Abilities
(wookiepedia)
Vader was a brilliant strategist and was still, despite his weakened powers, one of the greatest pilots in the galaxy. His armor did not dull the precognition ability he possessed since childhood and he was able to predict the movements of his targets during dogfights with pinpoint precision. He still possessed his former persona's amazing engineering skills, having personally overseen the design of both his TIE Advanced x1 fighter and the second Death Star's construction. His skill with the lightsaber, developed during the many battles and skirmishes of the Clone Wars and the Great Jedi Purge, was legendary and was even further honed through the Jedi that he dueled following the Purge. All of these abilities, however, were secondary to his incredible mastery of the Force.
The Emperor, having gone out of his way to keep Vader alive, took an alternative viewpoint. Though it was true to say that he had not bargained for an apprentice that was "more machine than man", Palpatine was initially of the opinion that most of the limitations on Vader's potential power were not physical but psychological. He believed that, were Vader to fully confront his choices and disappointments to completely shake himself out of his despair, he would have been able to reawaken the incredible power within him. Yet, while Vader made progress in this regard, he was never fully able to accept who, and what, he had become. Sidious would ultimately come to realize that Vader would never be the apprentice he longed for.
One of Vader's talents was to be able to block blaster bolts with his hands because his gloves are composed of a unique micronized iron that could deflect anything short of a lightsaber blow.
Darth Vader also seemed to favor the Force choke ability, as he demonstrated it numerous times throughout his life.
Vader also appeared to have great physical strength, able to lift a grown man by the throat with one hand, and picking up the Emperor and hurling him to his death. Whether these feats result from his use of the Force or from the power of his cybernetic limbs is unknown. However, it seems most likely to be a result of his mechanical appendages, as when he choked Obi-Wan in their battle on Mustafar.
Besides the life support it provided his ravaged body, Vader's Sith armor also offered some protection against the blades of lightsabers.
Because of his decreased mobility, he was at a disadvantage when dueling against beings using faster and quicker combat styles like Ataru. To counter fast-moving opponents, he would use the Force to pull out anything from his surroundings that wasn't nailed to the ground and fling the improvised missiles at his opponent. Without moving a muscle, anything from the venue of the battle could be used as a weapon to crash against Vader's opponents from all directions in a never-ending barrage. Darth Vader first used this tactic in the Duel on Mustafar, slicing shards of metal from the walls and shooting them at Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Weaknesses
While as a Jedi, Skywalker had the potential to develop into possibly the most powerful force user to ever live, his injuries and resulting cybernetic implants held back his force potential. Vader was still a skilled duelist and force user, but he could never truly become what the Emperor hoped he would. One example is Vader's inability to use force lighting due to his cybernetic implants- if he was to trigger this power, the circuits in his suit would not be able to contain the power, and his suit would explode. In all, Vader is still one of the greatest Sith apprentices to in history, but his powers were not outstanding.
Brief History [Spoilers][/size]
(starwars.com, since the wookiepedia one was waaaaaaay too long)
Darth Vader, Dark Lord of the Sith, was the scourge of the Jedi, a master of the dark side of the Force, and one of the Emperor's most trusted servants. He wasn't always a fearsome enforcer, however.
He began life as Anakin Skywalker, a young slave from Tatooine skilled in piloting and strong in the Force. Anakin's very origins are mysterious. His mother, Shmi, revealed that there was no biological father. Inexplicably, she became pregnant with the Force-prodigy and carried him to term. Some among the Jedi believed this to be part of an ancient prophecy of a Chosen One, willed into life by the midi-chlorians, who would bring balance to an increasingly darkening Force. There was another possibility, though. The child could have been the creation of sinister Sith manipulations, as the Dark Lords Darth Plagueis and Darth Sidious conspired to bring about the perfect apprentice by coaxing life from lifelessness.
Once discovered by maverick Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn, Anakin was taken before the Jedi Council to be trained. There was some controversy on the subject -- despite Jinn's adamant assurances that Skywalker was one spoken of in the prophecy, the council was hesitant to allow his training at the age of nine.
Finally, the Council agreed that Anakin should be trained, and he was assigned to Jedi Knight Obi-Wan Kenobi. Kenobi recklessly thought that he could be as skillful a master as Yoda. His mistakes had dire consequences for the galaxy.
Skywalker was seduced by the dark side of the Force. His boundless abilities fueled a sense of pride that hastened his fall. He chafed under the rigid strictures of the Jedi Code, and would discreetly transgress from the Jedi teachings to suit his wants. Despite it being forbidden, Skywalker secretly married his love Padmé Amidala. It was his deep-rooted concern for her safety that became his greatest weakness, one that the Sith Lord Darth Sidious was able to exploit.
Skywalker was plagued with prophetic visions of his wife dying in childbirth. His friend and confidant, Chancellor Palpatine, revealed to the troubled young Jedi that a pathway to immortality lay among the teachings of the Sith. Palpatine revealed himself to be the shadowy Sith Lord Darth Sidious, and poisoned Anakin's faculties with well-crafted words of praise and conspiracy. Anakin, who had reason to doubt the Jedi's capabilities and intentions, began to lean more and more to the dark side. When it came time to make the fateful decision, he agreed to follow Sidious' teachings and knelt before the dark master.
Anakin was renamed Darth Vader. The Sith conspiracy, which had been festering in the shadows of the Republic for a thousand years, sprang into action. Palpatine elevated himself to the position of Emperor, and dispatched Vader as his ultimate enforcer. With his unparalleled Force abilities, Vader swept through the Jedi Temple. He led his elite clone trooper forces through the polished corridors, cutting a swath of death and destruction through the remaining Jedi on Coruscant.
Vader brought an end to the Clone Wars by slaughtering all the masterminds of the Confederacy of Independent Systems on Mustafar. In his twisted perception, he was bringing peace and order to the new Empire, wiping away the corruption and chaos of the Republic's twilight.
Padmé followed Anakin to Mustafar, to plead for him to return from the dark side. When Obi-Wan Kenobi emerged from Amidala's ship, Vader was consumed with rage. He saw treachery at every corner. Distraught, he began to telekinetically throttle Padmé. She gasped for air before collapsing, unconscious, on the Mustafar landing platform. Shocked at how far his apprentice had fallen, Kenobi vowed to stop Vader and the two entered into a fierce lightsaber duel that traversed the burning Mustafar landscape.
Despite his newfound power bestowed by the dark side of the Force, Anakin was grievously wounded in the fight. Kenobi's blade sheared from him his lower legs and his left arm, and his crippled body tumbled onto the searing black sands below. Vader caught fire, and he was severely burned all over his body. His anger kept him alive, and he was forever scarred not only by his wounds but also by betrayal. Vader abandoned his former identity. Sidious took him from Mustafar to an Imperial rehabilitation center where he was rebuilt. When metal coupled with flesh in the form of cyborg implants and enhancements required to sustain him, Skywalker's transformation was complete. He was no longer Anakin -- he was Darth Vader.
At the time of his transformation, Vader never knew that Padmé had given birth to twins. Obi-Wan Kenobi hid the children from the Dark Lord and Emperor Palpatine. Vader somehow discovered that he had a son, Luke Skywalker, but never suspected he had a daughter, Leia, who was secretly taken to be raised by Bail Organa, Viceroy and First Chairman of Alderaan.
In the chaos that accompanied Palpatine's rise to power, Vader became one of the Emperor's most loyal servants. The Emperor entrusted him with the elimination of the Jedi Knights. During these dark times, Vader and his agents destroyed the remnants of Jedi order.
(My portion)
It was soon after this that Vader came to realize that the presence of his Sith Master had disappeared from the force. The servants at Sidious' retreat reported to Vader's Star Destroyer that the Emperor had gone missing, with no trace of where he was. It had also come to Vader's attention that a new, even more powerful presence had made itself known. Vader, having killed the Grand Moff, is now in control of the entire Imperial navy.
Having passed through the force voids that seem to be the cause of the Emperor's disappearance, Vader angles the fleet towards this powerful stamp in the force, prepared to bring order to his Empire.

It had become painfully clear in the past few days that whatever had been causing these recent events was a single entity- something so powerful in the force that even the presence felt on the other side of these "black holes" was nearly blotted out as the Imperial fleet passed through with relative ease. The echo this entity had left was strong enough for it to be a constant pulling at the back of Darth Vader's mind. This fact worried him only slightly. It did not seem to be calling to him nor warning him......it seemed to merely ask for Vader's acknowledgment. Every attempt to reach out towards it was useless, as the presence faded away as quickly as it had come to being.
The man formerly named Anakin Skywalker, now christened the Dark Lord of the Sith Darth Vader, stood at the bridge of his flagship- that of the Super Star Destroyer, a ship capable of carrying an entire invasion army rather comfortably. This ship was supported by several smaller Destroyers that surrounded the flagship in a defensive perimeter.
Many thoughts flowed through the Sith's mind as he stood with arms behind his back, his mind absent of distractions. The audible breathing that his life support systems provided for acted as a calming rhythm in his mind, helping him ignore the pain that to this day still coursed through his body, reminding him of his failure on Mustafar.
This was what he had wanted when he chose.....no, was forced, due to his actions.....to become a Sith. Before his defeat at the hands of Kenobi, Vader knew that even if he became the apprentice of Darth Sidious, he could eventually kill the man and rule the universe in a way that was beneficial to both him and his bride, Padme. That had all changed in an instant.
After Padme's death and Vader's defeat, that goal to overthrow the Emperor became impossible to accomplish on his own. Now that the man was dead, Vader was free to accomplish what he'd originally set out to do- bring order to the galaxy. It pained him to think that the woman he so loved would not be at his side as he accomplished this, yet her memory would provide the strength required to carry on.
Vader felt a presence approaching his back. It was obvious that the man did not want to disturb Vader, but had a question for him. Vader uncrossed his arms and came out of his meditation, the pain returning to his body. "Yes, Admiral?" He spoke, his voice deepened by the voice filter in his mask, adding even more of an imposing edge to his being.
The Admiral, a fellow by the name of Terrow, moved to Vader's side, also staring out of the viewports. "Lord Vader, we have come out of the void and therefore out of hyperspace. Should we keep on this heading?" Vader remained motionless, aside from the heaving of his chest. "The presence I sense lies before us, Admiral. Do not deviate from our current heading. You will be informed well ahead of time should we need to shift our course." "Of course, sir."
As the man turned on his heel and moved back down the hallway towards the navigators, a small hint of anxiety was easy to detect. It was only natural for a man who did not understand something greater than himself to feel nervous when facing such a thing. He would have to have faith that the Dark Lord would not lead him into an impossible situation. Vader also had faith that this would not be the case.
