Powers & AbilitiesWeaknesses
- Genetically Modified Martian Physiology - Martian Manhunter has been described as "the Swiss Army knife of superheroes." He possesses many of the powers of Superman. His powers come from his alien physiology. Born of Mars over a millenia ago, from a super advanced civilization, boasting advanced technology and genetic modifications over its people, the Martian Manhunter would appear to be a genetically modified being with incredible powers stemming from the changes made in his body. Whether this is their natural state or an advanced state given to only a few individuals is unknown.
- Shape-Shifting, Malleability, Plasticity, Elongation - The most incredible of the powers of the Manhunter is the ability to shape-shift. He can form clothing, weapons with nonmoving or nonfunctioning parts. His ability to imitate people and their mannerisms has stood him in good stead for his disguises. He has recently been seen to shape-shift into the size and shape of a common house fly and to enormous sizes comparable to skyscrapers. He is also able to change colors.
- Invisibility - The Manhunter can cause the bio-polymers in his body to lose his ability to reflect light, rendering the Manhunter invisible to normal light and human sight. With more increased concentration, he can render himself completely invisible along the electromagnetic spectrum, including the infrared and the ultraviolet ranges of the spectrum.
- Phasing - No physical explanation of this power make sense except that it is an aspect of his psionic powers shifting his mass into another dimension or out of vibrational phase with other objects in this dimension.
- Superhuman Durability - The bio-morphic structure of the Manhunter's body allows him to absorb almost all kinetic energies such as high caliber bullets, shrapnel or flying debris easily. He can harden his bio-polymers by rebinding them and increase his durability to the point where he is nearly on par with Superman. Hazardous environments effect practically do not affect the Martian Manhunter. He has proven to be immune to all known human diseases, but no experimentation has been done to see what more advance viruses such as ebola or anthrax might have.
- Superhuman Strength - The Martian has been seen lifting tankers out of the ocean for vast distances, stalemating powerhouses like Superman, and he has even helped tow the moon and objects as large as the Earth itself together with Superman. While at a rest state the limits of his strength are unknown, the Manhunter can lift 100 tons without much effort.
- Superhuman Endurance - J'onn's endurance is just as formidable as his strength or invulnerability. He can operate under extreme conditions for an indeterminate period of time without showing signs of fatigue.
- Regeneration - His regenerative abilities are so great that he has been able to completely regenerate from nothing but his severed hand, regenerate in moments from nothing than a puddle of green liquid and other moments, having his head cut off, and he has shown total control over his molecular structure.
- Flight - His bio-polymorphic skin and overall toughness make these speeds bearable and cause him no injury. The Manhunter has also been seen flying in space with no difficulty, J'onn can therefore fly at speeds exceeding the escape velocity of earth (7 miles per second) under his own power.
- Superhuman Speed - Either through flight or natural movement, the Martian Manhunter can maintain speed and reflexes far in excess to that of even most superhumans.
- Extrasensory Input - J'onn possesses nine different senses. One of these senses could account for instances of the Manhunter's perceived precognitive abilities.
- Martian Vision - Includes the visions of: infared, x-ray, electro-magnetic spectrum, telescopic, mircoscopic, and heat.
- Telepathy - Illusions, Induce Sleep, Mind Scans, Mind Wipes, Mental Shield, Download Information, Limited Mind Control, Though Sensing, Telepathic Relay, and Telepathic Assault; are his abilities that are branched off of telepathy.
- Master Detective - Highly developed detective skills.
- Logical Mind - Advanced reasoning and logic capabilities. Despero once claimed that Ted Kord's mind (IQ 192) was second only to that of J'onn J'onzz.
- Personable Attitude - Excellent human relations skills.
- Multi-lingual - Fluent in all Earth languages.
- Emotional Attunement - Highly developed empathic abilities.
- Psychic Pyrophobia - The Martian Manhunter has a psychosomatic fear of fire. It is unknown what the source of this fear is, whether it is a personal fear or a cultural fear, but whichever it is, it is a paralytic fear with the Manhunter. Exposure to fire, causes him to lose his powers, and in the case of extreme fire, to lose his control over his biomorphic form. The Manhunter is more vulnerable in this form and can take damage in this vulnerable state.
- Choco Addiction: It has also been suggested that something within J'onn's physiology makes him addicted to the chemicals used in the Earth snack, Chocos. Withdrawal symptoms include violent bursts of rage, and loss of intellect. However, these claims have never been accurately substantiated, and may even be false.
Biography
The Role-PlayerJ'onn J'onzz had been a Martian Manhunter (is akin to our own policemen and detectives, and J'onn was a commendable crime fighter on his planet) on the planet Mars in our own solar system. He had a wife and a daughter, M'yri'ah and K'hym, whom he loved deeply. J'onn's own brother, Ma’alefa’ak, had been stripped of his fellow Martians' innate telepathic gifts for the crime of mind "raping" another, and had grown very bitter over time. In his anger and insanity, he created something that would come to be called Hronmeer's Curse, a plague that preyed on a Martian's natural fear and weakness to fire. J'onn learned of his plan to destroy their race from the inside out, but was unable to stop him, he was then abruptly the last of his own race, and nearly lost his mind. A doctor would soon find out, rather abruptly, that the machine in fact led to the distant planet Mars, and in a bright flash, brought with it a green skinned creature known as J'onn J'onzz. This sudden revelation caused Dr. Erdel to have a violent heart attack and die, leaving J'onn stranded on a foreign planet with malfunctioning teleportation technology.
- Current Residence: Living with the Avengers team.
The Manhunter from Mars, last of his kind, now found himself in a strange and different world. Knowing that he currently had no way to return to his dead planet, J'onn wandered into human civilization, attempting to find a new life among them. Using his vast shape-shifting abilities, he took many forms across the globe, seeing life from every possible standpoint. He took the shapes of men and women of all types, and even animals. He spent much of his time in the role of a man named John Jones, a deceased detective, in which he took a liking to this particular guise, as he still possessed a strong passion for crime-fighting. J'onn first revealed himself as an official superhero when he joined the Justice Experience as the Bronze Wraith.
J'onn quickly put aside his fears of revealing himself, and changed to his typical Martian garb, but kept his overall appearance more humanoid. He battled alongside the other heroes, and they left triumphant. From that point on, these five heroes, along with Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman fought together as the Justice League of America. This team would become a mainstay in the DC Universe, consistently protecting the Earth from otherworldly threats and even home-grown emergencies. Through many years with the Justice League, J'onn J'onzz managed to find some measure of solace among his new found friends. The people of Earth accepted him, along with his fellow superheroes. He still kept many secret identities across the globe, maintaining a carefully built system that he used to learn all about his fellow Earthlings.
A new Justice League would become the Justice League International as it works within the United Nations. Originally, J'onn would often act, alongside Batman. He performed most of the tactical work, organizing the team and sending them on various missions. After the League went international, J'onn becomes the leader and that allows Batman to stay in the background. The League was basically run for several years with J'onn as the leader but Max Lord was in a big way the owner of the League. Under J'onn's leadership the League would go through some of it's best years. One thing J'onn developed during this time in the League is an addiction to Oreo cookies, called Chocos.
The League was reformed after the White Martian invasion and included some of Earth's premier heroes. J'onn would again be an integral part alongside Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Flash ( Wally West), Green Lantern ( Kyle Rayner), and Aquaman. He would often link his teammates telepathically to coordinate their plans. The ghosts of his Martian heritage would be a problem on more than one occasion and J'onn would often be key to beating them. When the White Martians attacked again, it was J'onn who helped provide the means of beating them, nearly sacrificing himself in the process. He would also have to foil the schemes of his brother, Ma’alefa’ak. Unbeknown to J'onn, he had survived the death of his people caused by a plague he had wrought and intended to finish the job by killing J'onn.
He was he one of the League's most powerful members, which was a problem when another piece of his Martian heritage came to Earth, a Burning Martian called Fernus. He had been attempting to overcome his fear of fire with the help of Scorch. The therapy triggered ancient genetic memories that had been repressed by the Guardians of the Universe and transformed him into a being of fire and hate. As Fernus, he attempted to asexually reproduce by causing a nuclear strike in Japan. The League was little match for his immense physical powers and his psychic assault. However, a joint effort by the League, Scorch, and most importantly, Plastic Man allowed J'onn to re-assume control of his body. In the epilogue of this story, J'onn claims to have overcome his fear of fire unless the flames have a psychic or magical dimension. This is sometimes overlooked in more recent adventures.

It was early. Actually, there was no early or late in the Justice League Watch Tower. Currently, the home to all of the Justice League members, except the select few who'd rather live on Earth and report to the tower for missions. It was a while ago now that J'onn had first discovered the many qualities and mysteries of Earth. Let's see who was here at the moment. Oh, there was the speeding lightning bolt lying lazily on the couch; Wonder Woman and Superman had been gone for a a couple of hours, probably fighting crime on Earth. The other green man on the team was just seen flying in from space of this moment. Walking towards his teammate in a very straight and mannerly posture, J'onn was just about to speak, but was interrupted by Green Lantern. The words that he spoke... his mind. J'onn could sense that there was trouble and hardly needed to his friend to vocally reveal the problem. Hawkgirl and Batman were in trouble down in Gotham City. Hmm, Batman as in Bruce Wayne: the Dark Knight. A stubborn hard-ass, but J'onn knew that he would do anything for his friends of the Justice League; and he didn't need his telepathy to know that.
"Gotham City." J'onn focused on the location and suddenly phased out of the Tower. Without waiting for Green Lantern to follow or not, he left with quick speed towards Gotham. Wait, why didn't he just communicate through their communicators? Whatever reason, maybe he needed to take a break and swap places with J'onn. That was not the matter, because J'onn quickly arrived at the scene. It was a simple bank robbery, which was on level one for J'onn's usual crime-fighting. After seeing Hawkgirl and Batman there, he knew that the villain had to be Gentleman Ghost. That and a quick mind scan to check. J'onn had never dealt with the man directly before, but now was his chance. With a quick nod to Hawkgirl, J'onn found Gentleman Ghost through telepathy and forced him to become tangible and visible.
With a quick dash, J'onn flew and grabbed the ghost by the coat. Holding him up, he let Hawkgirl take care of him; since he is one of her recurring enemies. Fleeing outside and letting Hawkgirl take care of him by attacking him with his weakness, J'onn knew that he was there to help. But he did not stay and watch the beating Gentleman Ghost by Hawkgirl. Even though he does it himself sometimes, he is still against the senseless beating of anyone.
